Florida Beach Flag Warning System
What each flag means
Lifeguards and county officials raise these flags at beach accesses throughout the day. Conditions can change fast, so check often — not just when you arrive.
Double Red — Water Closed
The Gulf is closed to the public. Entering the water can mean a citation from the Sheriff's office and puts you at real risk of being swept out to sea.
Single Red — High Hazard
High surf and/or strong currents. Stay out past your ankles and watch closely for rip currents pulling away from shore.
Yellow — Medium Hazard
Moderate surf or currents. Swim with normal caution and stay aware — most beach accesses don't have a lifeguard on duty.
Purple (paired with red or yellow) — Marine Pests
Jellyfish, sea lice, or other stinging marine life have been spotted. Never enter when purple flies alongside red.
Green — Low Hazard
Calm conditions with a lifeguard on duty. Rare along this stretch of coast — if no lifeguard is present, the flag defaults to yellow instead.
If You're Caught In One
Rip currents: what to actually do
Rip currents are the leading cause of Gulf drownings along this coast. They don't pull you under — they pull you away from shore. Panic is what turns them dangerous.
- Stay calm. A rip current carries you outward, not down — it will not drag you under.
- Don't swim straight back to shore. You'll exhaust yourself fighting a current stronger than you are.
- Swim parallel to the beach, along the shoreline, until you feel the pull ease.
- Once free, angle back toward shore, letting the waves help carry you in.
- If you can't break free, float and wave for help. Yell to get the attention of others on the beach.
Keep An Eye Out
Marine life to be aware of
None of these are reasons to skip the water — just reasons to stay alert and teach kids what to look for.
Blacktip, bull & occasional tiger sharks
Most common near sandbars and drop-offs at dawn and dusk. Avoid swimming at those times, don't wear shiny jewelry, and exit calmly without splashing if you spot one.
Man o' War & sea nettles
Look for a floating purple "balloon" shape or trailing tentacles. This is what the purple flag warns you about — give them a wide berth even if they look washed up on the sand.
Common in shallow, calm water
Shuffle your feet as you walk into the water instead of stepping down — it gives rays the chance to move away before you'd step on one.
